Acceptable
Use of the Internet |
The greatest impact on education in recent times has come through Information Technology.
In school the number of personal computers is rising, many homes also have high-level machines.
Two years ago a new computer network system, called C2K, was installed
at the school.
We have 45 computers along with other equipment.
This is an excellent addition to school resources.
Our system is permanently connected to the Internet.
The Internet is a vast network that has much to offer of educational value.
In school the Internet is used:
- ·
to skill children in using e-mail and computer conferencing
-
to investigate and research school projects
-
to help develop children's ICT skills and research skills
- to
publish curriculum and other information on the school's own
website.
We
must be vigilant in the use of the Internet.
The
Internet service used in the school is a filtered service
supervised by C2K Northern Ireland.
This is designed to give a high degree of protection against
accessing unsuitable material.
It cannot offer total protection.
Children are only allowed to use the Internet when supervised.
Pupils are warned that they should immediately tell the teacher
if unsuitable material is screened.
We will issue forms to home seeking your consent for children
to use school Internet facilities.
Children very quickly become adept at using computers and the
Internet.
Many children produce excellent pieces of work at home using word
processing and graphics packages.
Many have brought in information about topics that shows they
are quite expert.
The
Internet at Home
Please
be vigilant at home about children using the Internet.
We, in Primate Dixon school, agree with the Department of Education's recommendations that:
-
parents should discuss with their children 'house rules' for
using the Internet
- parents
should get to know the sites their children visit and talk about
these
- parents
should ensure that children do not give out any personal information
on the Internet, such as names, phone numbers, addresses
- parents
should tell children not to respond to unwelcome or abusive
messages
